Preparing for the Interview

Once you've secured an interview, preparing for the meeting is key. The following steps provide some insights to successfully making the right impression during your interview:

Researching the company

  • Asking insightful questions about the interviewer, the company, their competitors and their industry will differentiate you and accelerate your candidacy.
  • Peruse the employer's website. Clients expect candidates to be familiar with this material and will probe for to determine your preparation.
  • Internet search engines (www.google.ca & ca.yahoo.com ) and news service sites (www.theglobeandmail.com or www.nationalpost.com ) are useful research tools.
  • Using Meta Search engines like www.copernic.com may add another dimension to your preparation.

    Enhancing your interview skills
Interview preparation is an area few candidates spend any time on and consequently it is easy to stand out in the crowd in comparison.

  • You may find the interview tutorial at Monster helpful.
    Key points most interviewers are interested in are;
  • How were you measured in your last/current role and how did you fare in measurable terms?
  • What did you do to differentiate yourself from your peers?
  • What did you do to increase revenues, reduce costs or save time?
  • Be prepared with specific examples.

    Finding the location
Many clients supply maps on their websites. Failing that, detailed instructions can often be found at www.mapquest.ca

  • Plan to arrive early to ensure that transportation problems do not interfere with your appointment.
  • Being late and/or appearing rushed or flustered is the wrong way to start an interview.

    After the interview
That day, send each person you met with an email note thanking them for their time, confirming your interest in the job and outlining how your qualifications and accomplishments relate to their needs. This should be no more than 500 words and be reflective of the quality of your written work. It will be seen as such. Please copy your consultant on the emails.
